Consultant in Geriatrics/Neurology with Specialist Interest in Stroke Medicine
HCL International is currently recruiting for Consultants Physicians with s specialist interest in stroke medicine for a NHS Trust based in beautiful Somerset. This hospital has an excellent reputation for providing a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and specialist services.
The Trust was awarded medium sized Trust of the year in 2007.
By 2013, the population of the South West of England will have the highest life expectancy in Europe: we are determined to provide outstanding care to a growing number of people affected by stroke. We recognise the challenges of providing a comprehensive stroke service, to include access to thrombolysis, in a rural community, and wish to appoint a second consultant to work alongside the existing post holder to provide an excellent level of care to those affected by stroke.
This post has a clinical base interacting with both Care of Older People and the Neurosciences Department. Applicants with training in neurology would be as welcome as those with geriatric training and there is scope to adjust the job plan to match the interests of the right applicant to the needs of the service.
The stroke consultants will work together to develop and support services for patients with stroke across West Somerset. Applicants should have experience and a special interest in stroke medicine, as the post holders will provide the clinical leadership for the stroke service.
There are approximately 40 stroke admissions to this NHS Trust each month. A small proportion of patients are admitted direct to the ward and the plan is to increase this further in the future. Acute ward rounds occur daily shared by the Consultants and supported by the Associate Specialists. Consultants do twice weekly full ward rounds of their patients. The stroke coordinator and consultants review patients unable to access the unit directly
MAIN DUTIES OF THE POST
The post holder will provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist assessment, treatment and care to patients with stroke. This includes providing thrombolysis with A&E colleagues and contributing to the out of hours thrombolysis rota. The post holder will be responsible in combination with the other stroke consultant for providing inpatient care for stroke patients on the stroke unit and elsewhere in the hospital. They will work with the other consultant, 2 associate specialists and stroke coordinator in providing rapid access to TIA assessment. They will work with Geriatrician and community colleagues to provide appropriate aftercare and contribute to input into rehabilitation beds.
